Journalism Schools and the future of Journalism

Posted by: Lisa Parisot on: September 11, 2008

We attended a session today at the University of Missouri- School of Journalism Centennial Celebration about the future of Broadcast News.  It was very interesting to hear leaders in the industry discuss the change to “backpack” journalism.  The debate centered around the new technology, downsizing in all facets of journalism and what the impact will be on those students currently attending journalism schools around the nation.

This was a fascinating discussion.  I added to the fray with a my opinion that the tools we use to disseminate our stories are not really the issue, it is the consistent training of journalism students to think, question, observe, be curious, seek truth and tell the facts.

I was interviewed by these two freshman journalism majors.  They were stopping alums as we wandered through the campus to ask us about our experience at Mizzou and what course our path has taken since graduation.  All they had was their Flip video camera, a pen and a pad.  Look for my answers on the YouTube channel the Journalism School is setting up.

Tomorrow I will attend several sessions on the new technology and the changing face of journalism.

Assignments and Audio Clips

Posted by: Lisa Parisot on: September 10, 2008

Look on the sidebar for the written details of your assignment for this week.  It is called Soundslides # 1.  I have 8 audio clips which I have FTPed to my server.  I will send individual emails so you can attach them to your blog post about your first experience gathering and editing audio.

I am adding links to Audacity tutorials as well.  You can also review the many tutorials on Soundslides by visiting their home page.

I will be blogging from Columbia, Missouri this weekend.  I am attending the Missouri School of Journalism Cenntennial and Dedication.  I hope to gather interviews with a few of the many journalists who will be in attendance including Brian Storm, founder of MediaStorm.

Email is still the best way to contact me.

Thank you!

Show me your camera

Posted by: Lisa Parisot on: August 25, 2008

I was please to see that the majority of the class had their still cameras with them this afternoon.  I do this every semester on the first day of classes and then randomly throughout the semester to see who is prepared to cover news.

I also showed off my “inexpensive mobile journalist kit.”  The Flip video camera from Pure Digital, my Samson Zoom H2 recorder and my Nikon D70(okay not so inexpensive, I bought it used a few years ago).

I didn’t stop covering news when I left the TV news business.  Once a journalist, always a journalist and so it was this evening.

To demonstrate my point – take a look at these photos I shot about an hour ago while running a routine errand to the pet store for dog food.

We heard a loud crash while shopping and heard sirens as we exited the store.  I grabbed my Flip Video camera and shot these short clips.  No one was injured.  The driver walked away and fortunately none of the employees inside the Movie Trading Company were near the registers when this happened.

This is a clip of when News Happens!

News Happens Clips # 2

But my video camera was short on batteries – I broke the GOLDEN RULE of all multimedia journalists – I didn’t put fresh batteries in my gear before heading out.  So when the video camera died, I just grabbed the Nikon and shot some photos.

I didn’t ask too many questions, I just wanted to gather these images to demonstrate that news happens when you least expect it and you should always be prepared.

The Fall Approaches

I don’t know about you , but I have been glued to the TV this summer watching the Olympics.  Not only am I impressed with the competition, but I have been enthralled by the in-depth reporting on the many aspects of the games and the impact of the games taking place in China.  The journalism produced from this extended sporting event has been interesting, informative and invigorating.  I am inspired as I head into another semester with students eager to pursue their dream of becoming working journalists.
